Early Exploration

Watch the two videos and consider the big idea question:
1.  How might you describe the motivating factors for early European exploration and the prevailing/dominant attitude of the explorers?

Consider and further research the following (Connect back to the big idea question):

2.  Describe which explorers came to Canada

    • what was their nationality?
    • who commissioned them?
    • when did they start their exploration into Canada?
    • where did they start their exploration into Canada?
    • how did their journey to Canada begin?
    • why did they decided to explore the new world?

  1. So I think the Europeans wanted to discover places because they wanted to learn new things and discover places new other then were they stayed. I guess they wanted to claim what is theirs so they can be known they also wanted to discover new materials to use for themselves.

    1. Johnathan, I agree that the explorers wanted to be responsible for the discovery of many new things, however when Jacques Cartier visited, he was cruel to the natives, and referred to them as "savages" which was not true.

    2. I agree with Matthew, that Jacques Cartier was not at all friendly with the natives. I think you need to double-check your information to make sure it is correct. Also, as a reader, I find it hard to understand your comment.

  5. I think that the explorers wanted to explore because of the unbelievable fame they would receive. If the explorers found a new country, they would be greatly admired by the people of the country, and also the King or Monarch of there country. I also believe that the explorers influenced the natives in many different ways. I think that since explorers came from parts of the world that had more wealth (Europe) they were able to try and improve the natives way of life.

  6. I think that explorers chose to discover new countries because of the fame they would receive, for instance if they discovered a new country or continent, they would be famed by both the people of their country, but also the King of Monarch who ruled there. Also, I think that explorers tried to improve the natives ways of life once they'd arrived since they came from a wealthier country. However they may have also made certain matters worse once claiming the land for there countries ruler, for they may have disrupted the natives way of life.

Matthew , I agree with you because in some countys , fame is considered happiness . Also , since they probably thought that they are rich , mabye they also thought that all they needed to become perfect was fame and happiness , and to ge happiness all they needed was fame . So I thought that was very clearly stated and i juts wanted to point that out .

I think that the Europeans wanted to discover other places because in there country I think that it was highly populated so they might of needed more space. Also, I think that the explorers acted dominent because they were probably rich so they might've thought they were better than the aboriganol peoples.

  9. I agree with Nolan. The Europeans were very brave and persevered to find new lands. Finding new land gave them fame and wealth which they used to bargain (trade) with the Aboriginal people. Also they would find new lands that would please the king of the country they are from.

  10. Explorers went out into the world to find more land and gain power in their own country. More land claimed as their own or for their country means access to natural resources to grow food, build a fort or farming. They can also hunt and send fur back home to make clothing and trade to earn a living. Explorers also went out into the world to search for gold and other treasures that they could send back home.

i think that the Europeans went to discover other parts of the world because they wanted to see if they could take over the land because well they were very rich and thought that they could maybe get what they want because they were rich but when they came to canada the aboriginal people were already there on there land they called canada.

  12. Early European explorers might have been influenced by the ideas that were forming during the period for example Christopher Columbus trying to prove he could sail to the Indies in a different way. Also, they might have been allured by the success of explorers like Hernán Cortés, who conquered the Aztec empire, and retrieved gold and riches. Furthermore, explorers might have thought that there would be resources available to improve their country, which could not be produced in Europe. Lastly, as Matthew said, recognition by the monarchy and government would have an impact because fame is considered to be a factor in happiness.

Explorers might have had a prevailing/ dominant attitude because they thought that their country was civilized and overall better than the Aboriginal peoples who lived in North and South America. Also, in the second video, because the "interpreter" was older, Jaques Cartier might have considered his opinion to be more valuable than the young man's. In short, older people might have been considered more because they are usually connected with knowledge.

    1. JACQUES CARTIER
      What was their nationality?
      Jacques Cartier was from France

      Who commissioned them?
Francis I of France, he sailed under the same nationality that he was born under.

When did they start their exploration into Canada?
Cartier first explored Canada in 1534, then from 1535–1536, and again for the last time from 1541–1542.

Where did they start their exploration into Canada?
Jacques Cartier first sailed in near Newfoundland

I will address these two questions later.
How did their journey to Canada begin?
Why did they decided to explore the new world?

      Delete
    2. How did their journey to Canada begin?
On April 20th, 1534, Jacques Cartier started his journey from St. Malo in Brittany. He had 2 ships and 61 men.

Why did they decided to explore the new world?
They were looking for a passageway to Asia, through or around the "New World". If they couldn't find one, they were supposed to try to find riches in places like South America, like the Spanish found riches in the Aztec kingdom.

They wanted to learn more about the world and the people in the areas they explored. From the photos and pictures they seemed to have a sense of heroism too. The explorers probably always new that they had a pretty good life , although somewere outhere , their is an even better place where children could play freeley and people would have a good shelter , lots of food and ofcourse plenty of water . And if I were to put myself in thier shoes , I would be completely motivated to explore other places because just the thought of it would always be in my head , and when you think about it , where they life and their food and water , is nothing compared to just the thought of what it would be like to live in a place where their were beautiful houses not huts but houses , and just having all the necceties that they need every day to live a normal life .

For example : alot of people might say that living in a 1 bedroom house with one washroom no T.V and no computers is one of the worst ways that you can live . Although to them , thats one of the best ways to live , because they do not even have houses they have huts let alone a computer . So for them just to think about what it would be like to live our lifestyle is just so amazing , and that is what i think motivated the European explorers to explore different areas .

They knew if they found new land they would be able to gain global fame because they had discovered a "new world" and they would be able to get riches like gold. Also, Europe was getting crowded.

Like Isabeau said, the Europeans might of had privailing/dominant attitude with the Aboriginals because they thought that they were better than them and perhaps more civilized. Also, they might of wanted to take over the land the Aboriginals were in because of the great things that they could do, they would have fame, and Europeans would of had a chance of living much better with their own land.
